Character Information
Name: Kainè
Age: 17; technically 22, due to the five years of her being petrified.
Fandom: NieR
Appearance: One.| Two. | Three.
Kainè appears to be a seventeen-year-old young woman that stands around 5'4" (this is without her heels). She has white colored hair, which is usually styled with a braid going from her right side of the head to the middle, while leaving the left side completely straight. She has very light brown colored eyes. When it comes down to clothing, Kainè has very... little of it. Wearing just a little bit more of something like an apron, she is usually said to be wearing nothing more but lingerie, and is usually referred to as a "hussy" by Weiss. She wears a flower called a Lunar Tear in her hair constantly, and has both her left arm and leg wrapped in bandages in order to hide evidence that she is possessed by a Shade.
History: Her Wiki Page.
Her Village Information.
Wiki Page for NieR.
Canon Point: After the second battle against Devola and Popola, but before Emil's sacrifice.
Personality: Anyone's first impression on Kainè is that she is a cold, ruthless, and mistrusting woman who is stuck on doing things on her own. Even with her rather... unusual clothing, she has no intentions on seducing another person. In fact, she dresses in such clothing in order to show her more feminine features due to the fact that the children in her old village of Aerie used to ask her why she even bothered wearing dresses. Ths was due to the fact that Kainè is in fact intersex, and she wore such clothing in order to anger the villagers in her act of claiming herself to be one hundred percent female.
Though her rough behavior is not inherited by her past. In fact, she inherits both that and her foul mouth from her grandmother, who was just as aggressive and violent as the Kainè we see today. Due to her parents deaths happening at a young age, Kainè grandmother was the first person that she considered to have loved.
Her ability to simply say whatever is on her mind, along with her foul language and clothes, has her immediately judged by the few that happen to approach her. She is a difficult person to understand in general, and the only way to understand why she is so quick to offend rather than compliment someone is usually only understood by those that are patient to stay with her any longer. This goes for both the other person and Kainè herself, due to the fact that she does prove to be quite impatient herself. A good example of this is when Nier first meets Kainè, who is not even hesitant when lifting up her swords and going in for the kill.
Though if one is willing to be patient with Kainè, they will learn that she has been alone most of her life. She finds it very uncomfortable while talking to others, this is why she tends to wait on the outside of the villages whenever Nier visits them in order to avoid conversations. On the topic of avoiding villages, when both she and Emil are kicked out of Nier's village even though they helped defeat the Shade, Kainè simply shrugged and commented on how she is "used to it". This is because she would rather not have to deal with another person's opinion over her physical differences if they were to ever find out. You could say that she is generally afraid of interaction, though she is far to proud to admit it herself. This also leads to the fact that she rather speak with actions more than she does words, especially when someone does not meet her expectations of either insulting or threatening her. Though she does understand how to handle serious conversations, she is unable to do so without seeming either intimidating or at least aggressive while doing so.
Though it is not impossible for Kainè so expose a more gentle side of herself. A pure and excellent example of this is some of the conversations with Emil, who later sees her as something like a sister later when he remembers his past underground his mansion. Kainè learned how to love herself, and this is due to her grandmother, no matter how physically different she is than the others around her. With the confidence that she had found years ago, she reassures Emil that he should love his eyes (even though they have the ability to turn anyone to stone) because it apart of him. And though he does later physically change in order to save her from her petrified state, Kainè is still generally kind to him. While they are kicked out of the village and forced to live outside while Nier is in the comfort of his home, Kainè continues to show Emil her gentle nature. Going as far as cooking and sharing stories with them as they wait. This kindness also goes for any child who suffer from the judgement of people, and who are usually ignored or frightened by others. You could say that she becomes the protective elder sister, who immediately puts that person under her wing in order to protect them.
Kainè is also very loyal towards her companions and whoever else that is fortunate to earn both her respect and affection. Though she is still not used to being considered a "friend", which exposes that she is both quite pleased and surprised when Nier puts her into that category. Though this no way changes her from her aggressive and much more "manly-attituded" attitude, Kainè does seem to be much kinder towards him. Of course, this doesn't stop her from throwing a few kicks his way whenever he makes a mistake or tries to do anything reckless. While Kainè has proved to not take her life into much consideration, she refuses for someone that she is willing to call a "friend" into a position where they would sacrifice themselves. She is very much aware of her end due to the Shade that posses her, and thus believes that a friends life is much more important than her own. Though towards the end, her Shade, who goes by the name of Tryann, tells Nier of how happy and grateful she was to have such people in her life who had finally accepted her.
Game Specific
Suitability: Kainè is far too used to death and bloodshed, on both sides of the battle field. With her constant harassment back in the past and grandmothers death, this has caused her to grow to killing something without any hesitation. In fact, in some points of the game, she may even feel entertained while taking the life of a Shade, though the same entertainment is not found while taking the life of a human. Force is usually the first thing she'll use to win an argument; just trust me on this one, she'll use a lot of it. From using her twin swords, to plainly just kicking and punching her way through a whole crowd of enemies. Kainè is a type of person that may be knocked down, but has learned to stand back up and keep fighting no matter what.
Weapon: Kainè wields two twin serrated swords. So let us just give her those. The main difference being that after about five to ten minutes of being used, depending on just how much she uses it, the blades begin to dull and become basically useless. This is where there are plugs at the ends of the sword handles and thus charges the blade back to top shape. I would like to add that the more she uses them, the more heavier become. Once she is unable to hold them without having some kind of difficulties, will she be aware that she must recharge them.
Samples
Log/Third Person Sample:
A world completely opposite of her own, where technology was enhanced and no horrible disease took hold and slowly devoured their host whole. Where Shades were no longer in her path, appearing from no where with no thought other than to attack whatever living creature seemed to come their way. To which she would completely destroy them, tear them in half, having their blood completely coat her body before she had finally finished the deed, which would usually result to a nice crush of the skull in order to be sure of the finishing blow.
Yes. This world was the complete opposite of her own. In where she once took no hesitation on killing something, she was now looking into the eyes of someone. Taking their lives for some meaningless reason in her eyes.
Even with the knowledge of what the Shades truly were, even with the fact that she's already killed the previous humans of her past land a countless amount of times, it didn't help the stomach turning feeling whenever she was called out to kill another human being in Santa Destroy.
By now, she must be seen as a monster. Even without being completely swallowed up and controlled by the powerful Shade who had made his home inside of her.
Killing, destroying, her swords being so easily swung into the body of another being. Watching as the blood spilled and quickly make its way to color her pale skin, leaving a personal mark that she would surely not forget. And while she did somehow regret this, Kainè continued to listen to every order on her next kill. Ruthless and violent, her ways to kill not even bothering to change even when she faced off something that seemed much more harmless than the Shades that she once went up against.
"This is fucking pointless," She spoke with absolutely no consequence, looking over to the now unrecognizable and bloodied face that she had just recently finished off, "You bastards must be having a nice show, huh?" Kainè curls her fingers, clenching them into a tight fist as she could just hear his voice running in the back of her mind.
Hey, Sunshine, are you having fun yet?
She turned to leave, the corner of her lips slowly curving downward, "No way in hell."
Journal Entry/First Person Sample:
[There was no way in hell that she was taking a step out of her hotel room. Until she was either given another mission on killing someone, or there was a lack of entertainment in the near empty room.
She knew better than to just simply relax with people being sent her way left and right. While it was rather tiring, she was also growing irritated by the constant rude arrival of another challenger.
It was then she heard a loud and audible shriek from outside. Approaching the window facing the noise; only to move the curtain to reveal another fallen body, along with the victor struggling to pull their weapon from the unfortunate person's chest.]
Heh. [A smirk appeared on her lips, as she pushed her curtains back into place.] I keep forgetting that I'm not the only one stuck in this shit hole.
